LUMS Hosts German Ambassador for Dialogue on Academic and Professional Collaboration
On September 25, 2025, LUMS hosted the German Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Ina Lepel, and Economic Counsellor, Ms. Janine Rohwer, for a dialogue on potential avenues of academic and professional collaboration. The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Tariq Jadoon, Provost; Dr. Walther Schwarzacher, Dean, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering; Dr. Basit Yameen, Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; and other senior faculty members.
Discussions focused on areas of mutual interest, including artificial intelligence (AI), digital healthcare, and extractive industries. Faculty highlighted ongoing work in AI and digital health, such as initiatives to improve maternal health outcomes in Pakistan, as well as research at the National Centre in Big Data and Cloud Computing, which partners with 11 universities nationwide and hosts Pakistan’s open-data portal containing more than 1,200 datasets.
Climate change emerged as a key area for future collaboration, and it was noted that LUMS can contribute to developing solutions that mitigate environmental impacts.
The dialogue further explored opportunities for professional training and exchange, including the Senior Expert Service (SES) programme, and addressed broader challenges to international collaboration. Issues related to visa processes and bidirectional exchanges were discussed, with both sides exploring ways to navigate these barriers.
The visit concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to advancing meaningful academic and professional exchanges between German institutions and LUMS.
